Assoc. Professor Spyros Fountas is member of the Laboratory of Agricultural Machinery, AUA. He holds an MSc from Cranfield University UK in Information Technology, and PhD from Copenhagen University, Denmark in Systems Analysis on Precision Agriculture. He was also Visiting Scholar at Purdue University, USA. He has also industrial experience with Novartis Crop Protection UK, Monsanto Company Greece and Kubota farm machinery Company Greece. He is Editor in Chief in the ELSEVIER journal “Computers and Electronics in Agriculture”. He is Executive Board Member of the ICT-Agri ERA-NET Program and expert on the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) by the DG-Agri on Precision Agriculture. He has been Keynote speaker among others in the 17th European Weed Research Society (EWRS), in France in June 2015 about “Big data analytics for crop protection”; in European Conference on Precision Agriculture (ECPA) in Spain in July 2013 about “Application of Precision Agriculture technology in high value crops”. He is country representative for the European Society of Precision Agriculture and he is in the Editorial Board at the Precision Agriculture journal. His main research areas are precision agriculture technology and management, farm management information systems and farm machinery management and agricultural robots. He has 18 years of experience in agricultural robotics, precision agriculture technology and management and implementation of information systems in crop production. He is currently the coordinator of the Smart-AKIS H2020 Thematic Network on Smart Farming Technologies in production agriculture (https://www.smart-akis.com), a European Network mainstreaming Smart Farming Technologies among the European farmer community and bridging the gap between practitioners and research on the identification and delivery of new Smart Farming solutions to fit the farmers’ needs. He is also coordinating the SFS-17-2017 OPTIMA H2020 and GATES H2020 projects (http://www.gates-game.eu/en) to develop a serious game for the application of smart technologies for the farmers and advisors with focus of the application of smart spraying and smart fertilization. He is also participating in 4 other H2020 funded projects (IoF2020, APOLLO, PANACEA, BigDataGrapes).
